Assertive Communication

Assertive Communication
Written by Robert Bacal
Assertive behaviour or assertive communication provides us with a means of expressing our own feelings and needs in a non-aggresive and non-passive way.  Since we all have needs, expectations and feelings, we need ways of communicating them without being offensive, or giving up on pursuing those needs by being too passive.  Find out more about the components of an assertive request. The assertive request includes several components:

  • specific description of the current behaviour that is problematic
  • specific explanation of why that behaviour is a problem
  • specific request (to behave differently)
  • consequence of not complying (optional)
