Coach Mike Rice’s firing from Rutgers University has put “anger management counseling” in the news on a daily basis for over a week.
A lot has been made of his being mandated to take “anger management counseling”, little on no mention has been made of what this counseling consisted of. Nor is the obvious failure of his counseling a source of concern to the media.
The American Psychiatric Association does not list anger as an illness and anger is not listed in the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual of Nervous And Mental Disorders (DSM 5).
A review of the training received by Psychologists and other mental health professionals, clearly demonstrate that since anger in not a illness, training in anger management is not offered in any masters or doctoral programs in counseling or psychotherapy.
Therefore, the most appropriate intervention for assessment and coaching for persons experiencing problems with impulse control is Emotional Intelligence Skill Enhancement Coaching for “impulse control”. A national list of Certified Emotional Intelligence/Anger Management Facilitators can be found by assessing the provider list of the American Association of Anger Management Providers: ww
The VA TIER, Special Advancement for Achievement has approved the Three-Day Live Anger Management Facilitator Training for Veterans Administration Social Workers. The fees for this training is paid by the VA for Masters level Social Workers as well as step increases once the training is completed.
Being labeled as a “disruptive physician” creates considerable anxiety and may even reduce clear thinking. Unfortunately, none of the medical associations currently provide help to physicians in selecting programs for doctors who are faced with choosing a credible program for “disruptive behavior”.
Useful information in selecting a legitimate program for assessment and intervention of “disruptive behavior”:
Decide if you prefer to be seen individually or in a group. It is impossible to personalize any type of intervention that is designed for groups. It is also risky to share personal information in a group setting.
The two most recognized program for mandated services for physicians both offer groups of seven or eight on a quarterly basis in San Diego or Nashville.
Unless you exhibit symptoms suggesting psychiatric impairment, you not risk taking a psychiatric assessment. Such an assessment may permanently damage your career. No physician should undergo a psychiatric examination without justification. Anger/impulse control is not a DSM diagnosable disorder and therefore should not be mandated for “disruptive behavior”.
The programs at San Diego and Nashville were originally designed for “impaired physicians” and later substance abuse. If you are not suspected/accused for either of these disorders it is risky to casually submit to a subjective psychiatric examination.
If you asked to enroll in an inpatient program for an assessment, you will be give a series of psychological tests as well a psychiatric exam. This is totally unnecessary, expensive and risky to any physician’s reputation.
It is not necessary to travel to Nashville or San Diego or Mississippi in order to receive credible intervention for “disruptive behavior”. Instead, you can receive an On-line Emotional Intelligence assessment followed by On-site individual coaching in your own city or community. This coaching is provided over a two day twelve hour intensive without disrupting your surgery schedule. The two phases is followed by six months of phone coaching that is focused on skill enhancement in the skills in which the physician scored in the deficit range. After six months of phone coaching, a Post Emotional Intelligence Assessment is given to determine the level of success in the coaching.
The only way to make a lot of money in Private Psychotherapy Practice is to make money while you are asleep. This means that it is essential to have multiple streams of income independent of your active involvement.
Since I have had a remarkable private practice for forty years, I would like to share some of things that have worked for me:
Specialization in a needed intervention. For me, Child Psychotherapy gave me my start and Emotional Intelligence/Anger Management is my current specialization.

Tomorrow, November 14, 2012, George Anderson will present to the Long Beach Memorial Hospital Medical Staff.
This one-hour presentation is the same one that was presented to the American Medical Association’s Conference in Hawaii on November 9, 2012. The title of the presentation is “Emotional Intelligence for Disruptive Physician Behavior”.
Both presentations are a clear indication of the status of Emotional Intelligence For Impulse Control for Physicians in the United States. Any intervention that is approved for physicians is automatically considered legitimate/acceptable for the rest of the population.
Emotional Intelligence for Impulse Control/Disruptive Behavior is a current source of concern for HealthCare Organizations Nationwide.
Anderson & Anderson is considered the major organization for providing intervention for “disruptive physician behavior”.
A large number of Medical School Deans and Faculty responded with support for including Emotional Intelligence in the training of medical students and residents. All of the Deans present at the Hawaii Conference for George Anderson’s Presentation “What are the solutions? Anger Management in healthcare” clearly supports the inclusion of Emotional Intelligence for Impulse Control.
The following topics were included with examples in Anderson’s Presentation:
The important role played by the use of the Bar On EQ 2.0 Emotional Intelligence Assessment in coaching and training physicians.
Explanation of the 5 EQ Composites and the 15 Sub-scales.
EQ Skilled-based coaching.
Anderson & Anderson curriculum for skill enhancement in EQ.
The importance of practice in developing and improving EQ skills.
This presentation offered those in attendance an opportunity to learn how coaching can be used as a practical application for skill enhancement in Emotional Intelligence in Medical Schools.

The effectiveness of Evidenced Based Anger Management Classes have resulted in the inclusion of anger management classes in most At Risk Youth Programs and Reentry Programs for persons returning to their communities following incarceration. This new trend is occurring in the U.S. and Canada
Generally, when we think of anger management we tend to think of aggressive males who are physically violent and, as a result are mandated to attend anger management classes by Court Order as a result of person or property directed violence or aggression. In reality, most clients of Anger Management Programs are men and women who are mandated to attend anger management coaching by their workplace Human Resource Managers. HR Referrals are related to the prevention of workplace violence, hostile work environment or workplace tension.
The second most common referral source of anger management clients is actually from spouses or significant others who are concerned over their partners’ lack of social awareness or poor communication skills or lack of empathy or compassion. Many participants are self-referrals who recognize the need for professional assistance.
Monster. COM is one of the largest employment agencies in the world. In recognition of the importance of skills in emotional intelligence for success in many jobs such as sales, executives, customer services and other positions where interpersonal relationships are keys to success, Monster. COM is now advising job applicants to personally take Emotional Intelligence Assessments prior to being interviewed. This goal is to provide the job applicant with information regarding his or her blind spots and deficits in many EQ skills.
Finally, there is now a dramatic increase of volunteer referrals from persons, such as parents, who have become aware that they often exhibit a lack of patience, lack of empathy, assertive communication, poor stress management skills or a lack of competence in creating win win situations in interpersonal relationships.
In Summary, the current trends in anger management referrals are primarily related to the public’s recognition of the need and value of opportunities for skill enhancement in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness, relationship management, assertive communication, stress management, empathy and impulse control. The current focus of most anger management programs in the U.S. are actually based on emotional intelligence skill enhancement.
All of these programs are non-psychiatric and include Emotional Intelligence Assessments such as the internationally recognized Bar On EQi 2.0 Emotional Intelligence Assessment that can be taken on-line. In order to coach for skill enhancement in Emotional Intelligence, client workbooks, DVDs, videos as well as a wide variety of skill building exercises are essential. Generally, these courses are provided individually in a coaching format or in small groups.

Beginning on August 2, 2012, Bloomberg News and Business Week featured articles on Emotional Intelligence for Anger Management. These two articles were picked up by other business and medical publications as well as Law publication. “Scalpel-Throwing Surgeons Stun Anger Management Pioneer” … ”Anger Management Goes To The Doctor”
I’m my opinion, these publications have actually put the practical uses of emotional interline in the consciousness of the professional community including Linked in.
