A lot has been made of his being mandated to take “anger management counseling”, little on no mention has been made of what this counseling consisted of. Nor is the obvious failure of his counseling a source of concern to the media.

The American Psychiatric Association does not list anger as an illness and anger is not listed in the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual of Nervous And Mental Disorders (DSM 5).

A review of the training received by Psychologists and other mental health professionals, clearly demonstrate that since anger in not a illness, training in anger management is not offered in any masters or doctoral programs in counseling or psychotherapy.

Therefore, the most appropriate intervention for assessment and coaching for persons experiencing problems with impulse control is Emotional Intelligence Skill Enhancement Coaching for “impulse control”. I would like to bring to your attention an issue of serious concern to professional providers of Anger Management Coaching in California. As you are obviously aware, there are currently no laws in California nor any other state regulating the practice of Anger Management Classes. Consequently, judges and court officers have few guidelines to use when sentencing defendants to Anger Management intervention.

One unintended consequences of the absence of state or local standards in this area is the tendency for judges to refer these defendants to domestic violence batterer’s programs.  These programs, by law, are designed exclusively to address issues related to violence in intimate relationships. Defendants who are convicted of road rage, simple battery, property damage or threats will be unlikely to gain anything from such programs. Further, such a mixture of clients tends to undermine the effectiveness of domestic violence programs, which are designed to stop spousal abuse and violence against women and children.

This strategy has worked well for all concerned.

The time has come for the NBA Players Association, Coaches, Agents and the NBA to learn from the AMA how best to address the epidemic of anger and violence among players.

Anger is not an illness and therefore referring a player for counseling or psychotherapy for anger management is useless. Anger is a normal human emotion that is a problem when it occurs too frequently, lasts too long, leads to aggression or violence, impacts interpersonal relationships at work or causes health problems.

Coaching for “disruptive/angry physicians” is a positive intervention designed to recognize deficits in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management. There are clearly no stigmas associated with Emotional Intelligence Coaching for impulse control.

Just like mastering the “free throw”, Emotional Intelligence Coaching begins with the internationally recognized Bar On EQ Emotional Intelligence Assessment and is followed by an action plan on a weekly or more frequent basis.
