On-line Anger Management Classes undermine professionalism

On-line Anger Management Classes cheapens the legitimacy of Anger Management as a discipline

Anger Management is a favorite scam for Internet pirates. Since there are no laws in any state regulating the practice of anger management services, opportunists are free to market and sell cheap, inexpensive and worthless On-line Anger Management Classes to an unsuspecting public.

Judges and Court Officers lack the staff, knowledge or resources to determine the credibility of completion certificates and other documents used to claim attendance in Court Mandated Anger Management Courses

California State Superior Courts lead the nation in listing standards for Anger Management Facilitators. Here is a list of requirements of Court Acceptable Anger Management Providers in California:

  • All providers must have 40 hours of training and Certification in Anger Management.
  • Must use client workbooks designed to teach skills in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management.
  • Must use objective Emotional Intelligence Assessments.
  • The Assessment must provide a MAP that identifies the clients’ level of Emotional Intelligence skills in the recognizing and managing stress, anger, communication and emotional intelligence.
  • Must offer Post Tests to determines each participants level of success.

One way that consumers can protect themselves from On-line anger management scams is to check with the court to determine if a particular On-line class in question is acceptable to the court. Once the court is aware that the course is On-line, the answer will always be no.

Referrals to Coaching for “disruptive physicians” is Exploding.

It is only January 14, 2012 yet the predicted avalanche of coaching referrals from Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations for “disruptive physicians” is here. Mandating physicians to participate in any type of training or intervention is difficult and frequently challenged. Coaching for “disruptive behavior” is even more problematic because of its’ newness and extreme range of options.

Some observations from a major provider of Coaching for “disruptive physicians”:

  • The following is a partial list of Healthcare Professionals that may be responsible for mandating an alleged “disruptive physician” to enroll in an appropriate intervention program: Credentials Committee, Physicians Well-Being Committee, Risk Management Specialist, CEO or Medical Director. Many, if not most of these professionals are unsure of what takes place in a course or an intervention program for “disruptive physicians” which makes the referral conversation all the more difficult.
  • There is a tendency for those in charge to delay action until the potential for litigation is a concern. Such a delay may make follow through by the physician more difficult.
  • Since the referral options range from a one -week inpatient psychiatric evaluation and thirty days of inpatient psychiatric or substance abuse treatment for “rage a holism”, to an Emotional Intelligence Assessment and skill enhancement coaching, the mandating professional may be reluctant to risk damaging a physicians career by forcing psychiatric treatment for a non-psychiatric/medical condition.
  • Taking a highly skilled surgeon a way from his or her practice, hospital and community to attend a CME Course in another state for three days is often unnecessary and cost prohibitive.
  • Finally, none of the Major Medical Associations have taken the time to evaluate the existing intervention programs for “disruptive physicians” and develop a list or directory of approved providers nationwide.

It is in the best interest of the physician and the Healthcare Organization to carefully review the reputation of the organization and their curriculum to make sure that it is related to skill enhancement in self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management. Counseling or Psychotherapy is clearly inappropriate for “disruptive behavior”.

Coaching for “disruptive physicians” is EQ skill focused.

Executive Coaching/Anger Management for “disruptive physicians” is skill focused Emotional Intelligence

In contrast to Personal/Life Coaching or Psychotherapy, the major appeal of Executive Coaching rests on the perception that coaching is a powerful and highly effective approach to productivity and leadership excellence and that it is a relatively brief and cost effective alternative to psychotherapy or traditional training.

Coaching for “disruptive physicians” is truly in its’ infancy having been established in response to the 2008 Sentinel Alert by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations relative to physicians whose demeanor and behavior demonstrate problems in self-control, self-awareness, social awareness and relationship management as well as assertive communication and empathy.

Skill focused coaching is both a process and method for developing or enhancing technical, operational, analytic, relational, strategic, or self-management skills that occurs within a collaborative relationship with a coach. The goals are to reverse a skill deficit like anger management, empathy or stress management.

For “disruptive physicians” skill focused coaching is the primary or only agenda. Below is a list of some of the targets of Executive Coaching/Anger Management for physicians:

  • Self-awareness
  • Active listening: empathy
  • Assertive communication
  • Two – way communication
  • Increased decisiveness
  • Becoming less dominating
  • Enhanced people skills
  • Improve stress management
  • Work stress management
  • Conflict management and resolution

This type of coaching begins with a comprehensive Bar On EQ 2.0 Emotional Intelligence Assessment along with includes client workbooks, DVDs, CDs, and practice exercises as well as aftercare and Post Tests.

The Organizational Development Departments of two major health care chains are conducting a longitudinal study on the effectiveness of this coaching model.

In summary, Executive Coaching/Anger Management for “disruptive physicians” is a skill-focused intervention with specific targets for enhancement consistent with the deficits that are determine by the initial assessment. Finally, although the demographics are representative of a tiny fraction of the workforce, it is nevertheless a major step in violence prevention in the workplace.
